Community Meeting - Nov. 7, 2020 at 9:00 AM

Our November meeting covered the essential to-do’s after a disaster strikes—Atherton style. We learned how to help our households be mentally prepared and confident in the face of any type of disaster.

Agenda:

  • Welcome & team introductions

  • Update from Atherton Police Department

  • Update from Tom Prussing, A.D.A.P.T. President

  • Seminar: Immediate actions after a disaster strikes

  • Q&A

Summary:

Our November meeting kicked off with a warm welcome to Jon Mosby and Tom Owen, A.D.A.P.T.’s newest Board members! We also expressed our thanks to the Town of Atherton for their recent Proclamation recognizing the many contributions of the A.D.A.P.T. volunteers.

Chief McCulley and Sergeant Robbins from the Atherton Police Department discussed general town safety, including an update on town-wide security cameras and preparing homes to prevent burglaries.

Tom Prussing, A.D.A.P.T. President, reflected on the many accomplishments of our volunteers, including the helping of our neighbors during the first wave of the pandemic.

In "What to do when Disaster Strikes,” Tom Prussing reminded us of the priorities after a disaster (first, yourself; second, your family; third, your neighbors) and reviewed the Disaster Response Checklists. He also talked about the important steps to take in an earthquake, home fire, and power outage, and how to conduct a perimeter check on your property. This was another month where we focused on the basic, yet crucial, aspects of disaster preparedness.

In the Q&A, experts covered a variety of topics such as caring for elderly family members during a disaster, a deeper dive into the Town security cameras, fire extinguisher maintenance, fire blankets, and FRS radios.

Special thanks to Police Sergeant Robbins and Chief McCulley for joining.
