Community Meeting - Jan 2, 2021 at 9:00 AM

The January 2021 meeting topic was Home Safety – An Expert Panel.

First, we heard from Chief Jon Johnston from the Menlo Park Fire Protection District about fire hazards, fire prevention tips, fire suppression methods, evacuation tips, utility shutoff instructions, and more.

Next, Dr. Paul Jemelian covered the 4 first aid classes everyone should take, what supplies you’ll need to perform basic first aid tasks, and how to pack and protect your first aid supplies. Note that many of Dr. Jemelian’s recommended items are not typically included in pre-packaged kits – for example, pulse oximeter, portable blood pressure machine, skin glue, Tecnu, and Epsom salts.

In the Q&A, participants got their questions answered on a variety of topics like: fire extinguisher and chimney maintenance, when and how to involve first responders, the most common home injuries, the effectiveness of QuikClot, medical supply expiration dates, and more.

Special thanks to Police Chief McCulley for joining, and to Chief Johnston and Dr. Jemelian for presenting.

Recommended next steps:

  • Supplement your emergency supply kits based on Dr. Jemelian’s handout

  • Review Chief Johnston’s fire safety tips with others in your household (see the Zoom recording for the full presentation)

  • Sign up for SMC Alert if you haven’t already

  • Mark your calendar for our next meeting: Sat., Feb 6th at 9:00 AM
